Day 2 and it's the long distance race. The plan was for the men to race approx 5 miles from Ullapool to Ardmair and then for the ladies to race back. Turned out a little differently, the men set off at 11:00am heading North West out of Loch Broom into a stiff wind and choppy. The going was tough with the lead boats doing about 4mph and a large gap between the front and trailing boat, then the fog descended and visibility dropped, the course was shortened to keep everybody safe, so it turned into a 3 mile race. Ullapool won the men's race convincingly but North Berwick did manage to force our way past the Boatie Blest crew to take third place. Sadly conditions didn't lift in time for the ladies to race so our ladies are champing at the bit to get involved. Juniors and 60+ tomorrow, and we're hoping for some NBRC success.

And we're off...the weather is beautiful in Ullapool, all the boats are here and have been launched. Princess Anne arrived in style, by helicopter before boarding a RIB and receiving a "row past" by each of the skiffs...quite a sight. Robbie looked presentable and made us all proud (speech will be online soon!) The competition proper starts tomorrow with the long distance row, 7.5km, look out for more photos and updates tomorrow.

That was then...

Dec 2012 brought terrible storms to North Berwick that smashed St Baldred into North Berwick harbour leaving the wreck you see here...

After many months of skilled labour from our master boat builder Norman Thomson and his trusted lieutenants Willie and Johnny and with help from Sheena, Issy, Jacque, Bill and many others St Baldred was relaunched on 24th June to join Skiff John B

More to come...

With a third boat in build due to be launched later this year NBRC is back up to full strength and ready to welcome new members, come along on a Friday evening (7-9pm), or Sunday afternoon (2-4pm) to have a go at rowing, and try out these wonderful boats.

Finally, a huge thank you to Eyemouth rowing club for lending us Seabreeze while we were a boat short, it has kept us going and allowed us to prepare for the World Skiff Championships in Ullapool 7th-14th July.

Last Sunday saw a substantial North Berwick regatta squad making the short trip to Dunbar. With two excellent performances under their belts, could the impetus be maintained in the run-up to the worlds?

Last weekend saw the regatta circus move from one of the most distant venues to one of the closest, namely Port Seton. As a result of the Edinburgh marathon on the Sunday, the regatta was held on the Friday and Saturday and it was a skeleton North Berwick crew which took part in the first day's racing. The regatta organisers were hoping to try out a new race system with initial heats taking place outside the harbour but the sight of waves crashing over the harbour wall put paid to this notion and in the end, the heats and finals of the Friday races (the men's and women's opens) were held entirely within the harbour. Both North Berwick teams performed admirably with the ladies losing narrowly to Anstruther in the final and the men losing by a similar margin in the battle for third place. As the boats were put away for the day and the delicious smell of cooking burgers began to drift across the harbour, the sun broke through the clouds auguring well for the next day's racing.
